wee-4

In research methodology, there are six types of variables which are:

  1. Independent variables (e.g. predictor, treatment, explanatory variables)
  2. Dependent variables (e.g. outcome, effect, response variables)
  3. Moderating variables (e.g. variables that influence the strength of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables)
  4. Mediating/Intervening variables (e.g. link between independent and dependent variables. One way to tell if it’s a mediating variable: if you were to remove the mediating variable, the relationship between the independent and dependent variables disappears)
  5. Control variables (e.g. variable that does not need to be studied in the experiment)
  6. Confounding (spurious, lurking) variables (e.g. variables that cloud the conclusions of a study or experiment)
